What Are Same-Day Dental Implants ?

Same-Day Dental Implant, or Immediate Implant, is a faster procedure for implant placement. Unlike a traditional implant, which typically requires a post-extraction healing period (3 to 6 months), a same-day dental implant procedure places the implant immediately after extraction. They then place a temporary crown to protect the artificial root during healing.

Types of Same-Day Implant Solutions

For same-day implant solutions, there are several options, including single implants, All on 4, All on 6, same-day bridges, and same-day crowns/veneers. 

It is the replacement of only a single tooth, right after extraction 

This is a common approach for the All on 4 procedure. This is used when you have severe tooth loss and require replacement of an entire arch or the entire dentition.

The immediate implant method is often used with the all on 6. It is called all on 6 because a full arch of teeth would be anchored in your mouth on 6 implants.

This can occur when two or more adjacent teeth are missing. Multiple implants are usually placed, followed by a temporary bridge.  

This is not an implant procedure per se, but it is used when there is sufficient healthy bone to support a crown.

Same Day Implant Procedure: Step-by-Step

When it comes to a same-day implant procedure, don’t let the name fool you; there are a lot of steps. I will explore these steps in detail. 

Step 1

Consultation and 3D Scanning

Duration: under an hour.
In this phase, the patient may need an X-ray or 3D imaging to confirm eligibility for same-day implantation.

Step 2

Tooth Extraction & Immediate Implant Placement

Duration: 30–60 minutes for a single tooth 

If you are eligible, the next session will involve extracting the damaged tooth and replacing it with an implant. 

Step 3

Temporary Tooth Placement

Duration: 20–40 minutes

After a couple of days, you will receive a temporary crown to protect the artificial root.

Step 4

Healing & Osseointegration

Duration: 6–12 weeks on average, could take around 9 months 

This step depends on your healing process, after osseointegration, which is the process of the artificial roots bonding with your bone and becoming one, is completed. You will return for placement of your final crowns.

Please note that temporary crowns don’t function like real teeth; their primary purpose is to protect the roots until the final crown is placed after healing.

Step 5

Final Crown Placement

Duration: 20–40 minutes This is the final phase: you receive the final crown, and the dentist checks the placement, bite, and functionality. 

Report any discomfort and provide details so your dentist can adjust the crown accordingly.

It can take 6 days to 2 weeks and requires at least two separate visits. During the first visit, which could take 3-7 days, you would receive scans and a plan, followed by extraction and immediate implantation.

On the second visit, you will replace your temporary crowns with permanent ones. This is because healing and osseointegration can take from 12 weeks to 9 months.

Non-Smokers

Smoking reduces blood flow, increases bone loss, and interferes with osseointegration, significantly lowering implant success rates.

Good Gum Health (Tissue Health)

Periodontal disease leads to inflammation, infection, and jawbone loss, compromising implant stability and soft tissue health.

Good Overall Health

Uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune disorders, osteoporosis, or heart disease may negatively affect healing after implant placement.

Good Bone Density

Bone density above 850 HU (D1 or D2) is essential for implant integration and long-term success.

Socket Condition

Missing buccal plates, residual cysts, or postoperative maxillary cysts can compromise implant placement and stability.

  • Injury due to excessive implant depth
  • Loss of hard and soft tissue
  • Implant malposition
  • Restorative complications
  • Infections such as sinus, gum, and bone infections.

    Same Day Implants Aftercare

To heal properly, you need to follow a strict soft-food diet, avoid strenuous exercise, and keep up with your follow-up visits.

During your healing period, you should follow a soft-food diet and avoid crunchy, chewy, or hard foods. You should consume foods such as yoghurt, soups, mashed vegetables, eggs, and smoothies. 

Pain & Recovery

It is expected that the first week will be painful; you may experience swelling and discomfort. However, it should improve over time.

Avoid Strenuous Exercise 

As with any surgery, exercise is not allowed for a couple of days post-procedure because it can raise blood pressure, increase swelling, increase the risk of discomfort and pain, and interfere with clot formation. 

Follow-up Visits

After healing, you need to return to the clinic to receive your permanent crowns. If you used the temporary crowns as permanent teeth, they would break and could compromise the implant's success rate.

Long-Term Maintenance

Implants are like your natural teeth; you need to brush and floss them regularly, and take care of them as you would your natural teeth, or you risk affecting their longevity and shortening their lifespan.
