In some severe medical cases, individuals may require a full mouth extraction. This procedure wouldn’t be called common. It is often performed in specific cases, and patients typically receive an immediate denture after this procedure. In this article, I will discuss the process of undergoing a full-mouth extraction with immediate dentures.
This procedure is also referred to as a full dental extraction. It is the process of removing all your teeth from your upper jaw, lower jaw, or both. It is often needed in specific cases like severe tooth decay, an injury or an accident that has caused dental trauma, infections, and abscesses, or a severe case of periodontitis.
Immediate dentures are among the most common types of dentures; they are a removable dental prosthesis used to replace missing teeth.
They could be a full or partial denture, depending on the condition of your teeth. Immediate Dentures are often a temporary solution for replacing teeth, but some are designed to be permanent rather than temporary. They are pre-made, providing a rapid solution for missing teeth.
They act as a transitional measure for recovery. They protect your gums after procedures and help minimise bleeding as well as fill the gaps between your teeth after tooth extraction.

The procedure may seem intimidating at first, but when the process is broken down, it is not as daunting.
After a consultation, a dental surgeon would typically examine your teeth, determine the most appropriate procedure, and develop a tailored plan.
Usually, after you are prepared for the full-mouth procedure, you will need dentures, often immediate ones. Your surgeon will take your dental impression and send it to a laboratory to prepare it for postoperative use.
This is largely what one would visualise when the procedure is mentioned: a person talking out teeth with dental forceps. However, this is not the case, and you are often sedated.
It is even advised by people who have undergone full mouth extraction that you go completely under/ have a general anaesthesia for this procedure. This is to avoid any pain during the process. They reported that they experienced no sensation during the procedure. However, the pain occurred during the recovery phase.
The extraction process itself might not be as scary as you expect.
This process is usually performed immediately after extraction, as most immediate dentures are used to replace teeth temporarily to allow time for healing. Dentures also help fill sunken cheeks, improve bite alignment, and enhance aesthetics.
You can use various types of denture adhesives to ensure the dentures are stable. It is also advisable to wear your dentures for at least 24 hours postoperatively, as the pressure exerted by the dentures helps reduce bleeding and swelling.
Since most immediate dentures are temporary, after the transition period, you will get either an implant-based denture, tooth implants, or a conventional removable denture. Some options are not suitable after this procedure, such as dental bridges, flexible dentures, or any procedure designed for tooth support.
After an operation such as a full-mouth extraction, it is natural to experience a major change in your lifestyle.
It initially would take around two weeks for post-op recovery. However, it may take several months to achieve full recovery.
It varies from person to person, but you would likely need an adjustment period after the procedure.
After this procedure, due to normal swelling, gum bleeding, and stitches, you may need to eat soft or liquid foods for a while. If you are craving something crunchy, eat it now or wait until after full recovery.
After a full mouth tooth extraction, we can consider your gums injured. As with any injury, your usual functioning is affected. You would need time to adjust to eating or speaking with the dentures.
After this procedure, you will need to follow the instructions. During the first 24 hours after this procedure, you shouldn’t use any mouthwash, smoke, drink, or eat very hot/cold foods. You could use a cold compress to relieve pain. Don’t forget to take your medications on time and don’t miss your regular dental check-ups.
The cost of a simple tooth extraction ranges from £75 to £150 per tooth for a simple removal, to over £500 per tooth for complex surgical or impacted wisdom teeth removal. The average cost is £5,000 to £ 20,000 for a full-mouth extraction, depending on the case. The cost would also depend on the type of extraction, the number of teeth, the complexity, and the clinic.
Dentures are often calculated separately as well, because their cost varies with their type and material.

The average cost of an immediate denture ranges from £650 to £1,500 for a full arch.
The material would significantly affect the price, as acrylic is more affordable than other materials. Metal or porcelain would be more durable and sturdy.
| Type of Denture | Estimated Price |
| Acrilyic | £500 – £1,200 per arch, sometimes up to £1,500 for higher-end options |
| Metal or Cobalt | Between £700 and £1,500 |
| Valplast Flexible Dentures | Between £600 and £1,000 |
Additionally, Immediate dentures must be replaced within 4 to 8 months because they are not designed to be permanent.

There are many options considered permanent replacements for teeth. Whether you will get a dental implant, a bridge, or a permanent denture.
When it comes to replacing a full set, you can get an all-on-4 dental implant or an all-on-6 dental implant. It’s the process of creating biocompatible titanium roots in 4 or 6 places in the jaw to support a whole set of teeth. This could be a great replacement.
Some would describe this procedure as an improved hybrid between a bridge and a denture.
The benefits of this procedure are immediate results, natural-looking teeth, improved bone health, and cost-effectiveness compared to the long-lasting solution.
You can easily get the implant in a single setting. Due to advanced technology and high-quality materials, most implants look and feel natural. The implants often stimulate the jawbone, preventing the bone loss that typically follows tooth loss. Additionally, dental implants can last for decades, making them highly cost-effective, as they are a one-time charge.
Permanent dentures are often implant-based and resemble dental implants. However, there are some key differences. Permanent dentures can be removed to be cleaned, while dental implants would be infused with your jawbone as part of a process called osseointegration.
Dental implants are also more functional than Permanent Dentures. Dental implants tend to mimic a natural tooth bite. Permanent dentures need regular cleaning and check-ups. On the other hand, dental implants can be maintained like natural teeth.
A bridge is a prosthesis that replaces multiple adjacent missing teeth, supported by dental implants or natural teeth. You can use it as a supporting prosthesis to dental implants. However, it is not advised for a complete set of teeth.
